EXCLUSIVE! Samantha Mumba reveals she is trying to avoid singing about men and is focusing on women empowerment in upcoming album

We caught up with Samantha Mumba at the launch of the National Takeaway Tuesday with Just Eat and she exclusively revealed to Goss.ie that she has tried to avoid singing about men and instead focused on women empowerment for her upcoming album.

The mother-of-one released several chart-topping hits in the early noughties, but took a break from her music career to try out acting and presenting over the past few years.

It looks like the singer is ready to come back with a bang in 2019, as she told us that a lot of her songs are inspired by her three-year-old daughter, Sage and she tried to stay away from writing songs about men.

“Very much my daughter, I’m very inspired by her. I’ve just been really loving writing and getting back into that whole process. But I have been conscious to kind of, somewhat, stay away from writing and singing about men. I kind of think there is so much more to sing and to talk about. So I suppose probably a lot about women empowerment and that’s kind of been the vibe. I’m excited for everyone to hear it.”

As for how her new music will differ from her noughties hits, Samantha said: “It was a long time ago and obviously I was writing then as well, but I was sixteen-years-old. I’d like to think that I have a lot more to write about or life experience. I suppose just where I’m at now, as a woman and at the age I am.”

“It’s the same thing as before, it’s just where I am at in my life right now and that’s what I’m expressing and hopefully there’ll be a lot of other women who relate to what I’m saying.”

The singer went on to say that the music industry has changed a lot since she created her last album: “My perception definitely has changed, but on top of that has changed so much. Even when I was out, there was no social media. There was no way to kind of have direct contact with people and get feedback, it just didn’t exist.”

“So it’s so exciting for me now and it’s just so fun this time around and kind of to be able to have that relationship directly with people. See what people want and what they don’t want and kind of just build those relationships. I think it’s important and it’s just great to have that block is gone that always used to be there.”

“It really has been a very authentic writing process. So it hasn’t even been ‘oh I want to do a song like that because that will do well in the charts.’ It has honestly just happened and I have a great team in L.A. that I’ve been writing with and recording with. It’s all been coming together really well, so if I have to put a label on it I’d definitely have to say just catchy, pop, big R&B songs. I suppose it’s current, I hope it’s current.”

When asked if she was shocked by the reaction from her fans after she announced the new album, Samantha said: “It totally blew me away, it’s really really spurred me on to be like ‘okay I’m definitely doing this.’ I suppose up until that point I could kind of change my mind if I wanted to, where as now I’m like ‘okay now I’ve announced it.”

“I’ve got to deliver and follow through, so it’s been good for me, it’s been really good. Honestly I really do stand behind the songs and the music. I really really am proud of them. So I’m just excited for people to hear it now and get out there.”

The singer added that she loves working in the music studio and that it wasn’t strange returning to the recording process: “No, not at all, that’s the really fun part. It’s getting to create something from scratch and record. No, that’s my happy place. Yeah definitely and I love presenting as well and I love acting. I’ll definitely revisit those things as well, but I just feel like at the moment on…you know I’m doing a bunch of different things as well..but that’s certainly my priority.”

The singer also revealed that she has been working on the album for quite a while and wants to be very precise with how the final product is created: “A good few months now and we’re still not finished so as soon as, I mean I get back to L.A. next week, I’ll be back in the studio and back writing and recording and all of that.”

“As of now I’m really happy with the songs that we’ve done, but I’d rather record a lot more and then really just fine-tune and pick the songs. I want to be very picky and be meticulous about that. I want every song on the album to be a potential single, I don’t want any fillers or any ‘that’ll do, let’s just add that in.’ I want every song to be incredible, so it’s good.”

Samantha also told us that she plans to announce plenty of gigs and hopes to have two tracks out before the summer: “There will definitely be stuff, we are kind of tying that stuff in now. It’s all around the music, I’m trying to lock down now an actual release date. Once I have that in place I can just tie in everything else in around it. But definitely I will be doing gigs and definitely live performances. That’s crucial.”

“The goal is to have two singles out before the summer. So yes, that’s kind of my goal right now, so we’ll see.”

Samantha chatted to us at the launch of National Takeaway Tuesday with Just Eat and told us a bit about the charity campaign: “It’s fantastic, it’s for one day only tomorrow. It’s in association with the Peter McVerry Trust, so basically anyone who orders a takeaway from Just Eat tomorrow, they get 10% off their order and also 10% goes to the Pete McVerry Trust. So the idea is just to raise as much money as possible because last year I think they managed to raise about fifty-thousand euro which will rehome five people, which is huge.”

“The more the better. I think this year if we can raise even more would just be incredible. So it’s just bringing awareness to that, I think it’s a really great campaign. I think it goes hand in hand, I think you’re doing something good and then you get the discount on a takeaway. It’s a great excuse for a cheeky Tuesday treat.”
