EXCLUSIVE! PJ Gallagher reveals why he quit social media last year

PJ Gallagher has revealed why he quit social media last year.

The 45-year-old has admitted he deleted “all the apps” from his phone last May, before he reactivated his accounts in February.

Speaking to Goss.ie to celebrate the launch of his new show on Radio Nova with Jim McCabe, PJ explained why he distanced himself from Instagram and Twitter.

PJ confessed: “I switched off in May and I never looked at it again until three weeks ago.”

“Yeah, I deleted all the apps I cancelled all the accounts and then I relaunched them only three weeks ago.”

“I hadn’t looked at them not one single time throughout the pandemic because I found it all so dire and depressing,” he said.

PJ’s co-host Jim McCabe agreed, and shared why he’s never been very active on social media.

“From my perspective, I’m not a huge social media user because, I’ll be honest with you, it frightens the sh*** out of me,” he confessed.

“It scares me, Twitter in particular. It just frightens me that people can just give you abuse because they feel like it or whatever so I wasn’t a massive user of it.”

Speaking about their move to Radio Nova, PJ and Jim admitted they’ve been overwhelmed by the reaction to their new show on social media.

Making the move from Classic Hits, ‘Morning Glory with PJ & Jim’ will kick off on Radio Nova from April 1st, airing weekday mornings from 6am – 10am.

Jim said: “If the social media stuff is anything to go by, it’s been incredible. It’s kind of taken us back a little bit because the reactions whenever we post anything about it, it’s very positive.”

“People love Nova, they can’t wait and all these welcomes and stuff it’s slightly taken us back that it has been as positive on social so far.”

The radio hosts have been working together since 2016, and PJ gushed about their genuine friendship.

The comedian said: “There’s very few jobs where you get to get up and hang out with your mates for a living. The truth is we really are good mates.”

“We text each other all through the week about the football and all that stuff, we’re in contact constantly. We’re not just working together.”

“I’ve worked with other people and I swear to God before I even got in, I’d be thinking I cannot wait to not see this person and that is literally the exact opposite of what this is.”

When asked what has helped them both stay positive over the past year during the pandemic, Jim replied: “To be honest I’d say each other.”

“I haven’t felt particularly outside of the norm, everybody’s talking about the new
normal and all that kind of stuff, and I haven’t had to experience [that]…”

“The option to come in, and it’s not coming to work in terms of a job that you hate, it’s a job you love with your mate and all that sort of stuff. This has made a huge difference.”

PJ added: “When you wake up and you’re miserable… If I was still working from home I probably wouldn’t know how to shake that funk off.

“When you come in here [to the studio] and you have to start looking for stuff that’s going to cheer other people up and it works on you then as well you know!”

“You come in here in foul humour and then by 7 o’clock you’re not anymore. Your job is literally to focus on the positive, whether you like it or not!”

‘Morning Glory with PJ & Jim’ will kick off this Thursday, April 1st – airing weekday mornings from 6am – 10am on Radio Nova.
