EXCLUSIVE! Keywest frontman warns: ‘The number one thing that breaks a band is money’

Andy Kavanagh has warned bands starting out that the one thing that will break them is money.

The Keywest frontman admitted to Goss.ie that the best thing a band can do to prevent them from breaking up, is to produce their own music.

“Whenever someone asks me what advice I’d give to someone starting out, it’s always the same thing – the number one obstacle and the number one thing that breaks a band is money,” he said.

The Dubliner revealed that it is going to be hard to produce your own music, but it will get easier and save you a lot in the long run.

“That comes from basically hiring people to do jobs that you could do yourself,” Andy told Goss.ie.

“My recommendation is start producing your own music.

“You’re not going to be very good at the start but you’ll get better.

“That will lead you to being able to produce your own things and will save you a lot in the long run.

“When you really need it most, it will come in handy.”

The five-piece band are best known for organically building up their, now huge, fanbase by busking in Dublin’s City Centre.

Andy admitted that while Dublin is his favourite place to busk, Los Angeles was the best – because of the “weird” demographic over there.

“We used to love performing in Dublin. We don’t do it anymore but that was my favourite place to busk. The best place we’ve ever done it would be Los Angeles,” he added.

“It was a lot of fun with a really weird demographic over thereThe L.A. crowd is more vocal. You get a good eclectic diverse sort of array of people and that can be a lot of fun.”

Keywest are set to tour around Ireland and the UK later this year with their first Irish gig kicking off on November 25th.
