EXCLUSIVE! John Butler on what inspired Handsome Devil

John Butler has opened up on what inspired his film Handsome Devil.

The story follows two students Ned and Conor who are forced to share a bedroom at their boarding school.

The loner and the star athlete at this rugby-mad school then form an unlikely friendship, until it’s tested by the authorities.

Goss.ie exclusively spoke to the director and screenwriter at the Irish premiere for Handsome Devil at the Audi Dublin International Film Festival.

When asked where he got his inspiration for the film, John said, “It’s partly based on my own childhood I would say.

“But I also love coming of age films, and high school films. That kind of American sub-genre. I always wanted to make a film that kind of fit in that area.”

The director then touched on the subject of how he chose actors for the film, “You just want good actors, and good actors who can either play rugby or sing.

“There’s a whole bunch of different skills that are on display there. So yeah it’s really about virtuosity and personality, and they’re all lovely guys.”
