EXCLUSIVE! Cillian Murphy opens up on the new season of Peaky Blinders

Cillian Murphy spoke exclusively to Goss.ie about his excitement for season five of Peaky Blinders with new director Anthony Byrne at the reigns.

Speaking at the World Premiere of his new movie The Delinquent Season in Cineworld he shared his delight.

The next season of Peaky Blinders will see Cillian reprise his role as the notorious Thomas Shelby as his gang, the Peaky Blinders, expand to America with Al Capone’s help.

Cillian wasn’t sure what to expect from the fellow Irishman yet, “Well you know they’re still writing the scripts but I’m delighted Anthony’s on board.”

“He’s a great director and I think everybody is back!”

“I’m looking forward to diving in. I don’t know [what to expect] because they’re still writing them.”

A World Premiere postponed by Storm Emma saw the cast of The Delinquent Season gather in Dublin to close the Audi International Film Festival.

The movie, which Cillian believes is unlike anything Irish story that’s ever been told, sees two married, middle-class Dublin couples deal with emotional abuse and infidelity.

Director Mark O’Rowe said of the film that he didn’t want people to judge the characters to harshly and have who their loyalty lay with shift throughout the film.

Speaking about Mark’s direction of these complex characters Cillian said, “He never judges the characters, but he’s hard on them, you know what I mean?”

“He asks questions of them and I think the film asks questions of the audience and I think that’s good writing.”

Cillian’s character cheats on his wife with a family friend who is in an emotionally abusive relationship in the movie.

Asked whether he found it more difficult to play a middle class married man, a role not dissimilar to his own life, than a gangster like Thomas Shelby he spoke about his motivations for getting involved in the project.

“As you get older I suppose you want to tell stories that are a bit closer to your own existence really and that’s just the natural evolution really.”

The Deliquent Season is in cinemas nationwide on the 27th of April.
