Doireann Garrihy defends Paul Mescal after he came under fire over comments he made on her podcast

Doireann Garrihy has defended Paul Mescal, after he came under fire over comments he made on her podcast.

The Irish actor was interviewed for Doireann’s Laughs Of Your Life podcast recently, but a comment he made about Irish people seems to have ruffled some feathers.

During their chat, the Normal People star admitted there’s “negative connotations” around Irish people “doing well”.

The 24-year-old said: “I love being Irish and Irish people, but I think sometimes there can be a little bit of – and I haven’t felt this – but there can be a bitterness.”

A few days after the interview hit headlines, the Sunday Independent published an opinion piece which stated: “Emmy-loser Paul Mescal last week personally victimised the whole of Ireland as a guest on Doireann Garrihy’s podcast.”

Quoting the comment Paul made about Irish people’s “bitterness”, the author wrote: “Bitterness! Bitterness? When all we’ve done is conceal the fact from the rest of the world that he did not, in fact, invent GAA shorts.”

After spotting the op-ed on Twitter, Doireann made sure to defend Paul by sharing the article, and writing: “I really don’t think he did 😂.”

On the latest episode of #GossChats, Goss.ie CEO Ali Ryan chats with top makeup artist and influencer Keilidh Cashell about her brand new makeup range, adjusting to life in the spotlight and how she’s kept calm during the pandemic.
