Dermot Kennedy praises his aunt Mary for helping him deal with fame

Dermot Kennedy has praised his aunt Mary for helping him to deal with fame.

The singer, who is the nephew of retired RTÉ presenter Mary Kennedy, admitted that his aunt “led by example” as he rose to fame in recent years.

“It’s not even that she ever sat me down and gave me advice, or told me how to do it,” he told the Irish Daily Mirror.

“But she leads by example and sets a beautiful example in terms of, even when we are on holidays, knowing how to treat people when they come up and talk to you.”

The Giants singer added: “And how to, even when she is on TV, how well prepared she is and how she conducts herself. So she never needed to really tell me anything then, because it was all there.”

The 28-year-old also opened up about working with his cousin Lucy, who is Mary’s cousin: “We have worked together for ages now.”

“Lucy came on tour with us I think from the very beginning and as soon as we started doing proper tours in the US she was with us. Yeah she is incredible.”

“I wouldn’t say it’s lucky, because I have done it intentionally but everything that has fallen into place is great.”

Dermot praised his aunt for leading by example when it comes to fame

The news comes just days after Mary praised Dermot for being so “grounded”.

The former Nationwide presenter said she’s glad Dermot doesn’t have “notions”, despite his sudden rise to fame.

Speaking on The Six O’Clock Show, Mary said: “Recently he did this really lovely show from the Natural History Museum in London.”

“We all went up to my brother’s house, and we had a barbeque, and we sat around the telly ready for 9 o’clock.”

“It’s such a strange feeling. For me, I’m an aunt, but for his mam and dad, his sister was there as well, they must be proud as punch.”

“It was brilliant and Paul Mescal was there as well,” she continued.

“I think both of them are very grounded and they had very normal upbringings and they don’t have notions.”
