Damien Dempsey reveals he was 'scared' as he saved teen from drowning

Singer Damien Dempsey has said he’s going to start life-saving classes, after he bravely saved a teen from drowning.

The Dublin star came upon a man struggling to stay above water in the River Slaney in Co Wexford, and towed the swimmer out with a sheet.

“I’m a strong swimmer but I still wouldn’t try to rescue anybody without a rope, or in this case, a sheet.

“I threw the sheet out and he grabbed it and then I could feel the weight of him dragging me down. It scared me,” the singer admitted.

“The guy had swallowed a lot of water and there was a weird look in his eyes.

“I managed to drag him in and he was lifted out. The river was very deep in the middle, but shallow at the sides,” he told the Irish Mirror.

“I wouldn’t recommend anybody to jump in to save someone who is drowning. I’m actually going to start a life-saving [course].”

And after saving the teen Damien still performed at the Wexford Strawberry Fest.

“We dried out my clothes in the sun and it all went ahead,” he said.
