Croke Park residents to attend meeting over planned Garth Brooks concerts

Croke Park residents are set to meet with stadium bosses tonight ahead of the planned Garth Brooks concerts.

The Dublin City Council recently granted permission for Garth to play the iconic stadium on September 9, 10 and 11 in 2022.

However, it’s understood the council has received an application for two more dates on September 16 and 17.

Former Lord Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring said on Newstalk: “People really are concerned that 80,000 people for five days or five nights is going to have a disruptive effect.”

“It’s a question of being able to get in and out of your house. We’ve heard the phrase ‘prisoners in your own homes’ and if people feel that that could happen, we have to address that now and look at how that can’t happen.”

“The traffic will be a huge thing because people really do want to move around as freely as they can.”

Ahead of the meeting with residents tonight, Nial said: “I think this is probably the first of a series of meetings that are going to happen. It’s a year out, so giving credit to the GAA and the promoters, at least this time there is engagement and consultation.”

Peter Aiken from Aiken Promotions is set to attend the meeting tonight, as well as GAA representatives.

Garda representatives may possibly been in attendance along with the security firm that looks after Croke Park on match day – according to Ring.

Those living within a 1.5k radius of the stadium are encouraged to attend the meeting later this evening at the Handball and Community Centre on Dublin’s Sackville Avenue.

Back in 2014, Garth hoped to play five shows in Croker but Dublin City Council refused to grant a licence for two of the dates after receiving complaints from residents.

The country singer subsequently cancelled all his planned concerts at Croke Park, which caused uproar.

The entire situation was a massive disaster, as 400,000 fans had already purchased tickets for the gigs.
