Cillian Murphy ‘not surprised’ by Ruth Negga’s Oscar nomination

Cillian Murphy has admitted that he’s “not surprised” by Ruth Negga’s Oscar nomination, due to her brilliance.

The Peaky Blinders star first worked with the Irish-Ethiopian actress when she was a mere 22-years-old.

The Limerick native played the role of Charlie, the best friend of Cillian’s transgender character Kitten in Neil Jordan’s film Breakfast On Pluto back in 2005.

“I was so thrilled. And again you’re not surprised really when you see someone who’s that brilliant and that talented,” Cillian gushed, when asked about Ruth’s Oscar nod.

“When we did Pluto, it was 14, 15 years ago maybe, so it’s a long time. But she made such an impression in that film and then continued on. You could see it was just an upward trajectory the whole time,” he told the Irish Mirror.

Neil Jordan is said to have rewrote the Breakfast On Pluto script to include her, after he was blown away by her audition.

Ruth is nominated for her role in Loving, which tells the story of real-life Virginia couple Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga), whose 1967 Supreme Court case legalised interracial marriage in the US.

Ahead of the Academy Awards, Ruth stunned on the red carpet at the Independent Spirit Awards last night in Los Angeles.
