Catherine Walker and Eleanor Methven open up about working alongside Paul Mescal in The Deceived

Catherine Walker and Eleanor Methven have opened up about their experiences working alongside Paul Mescal for the brand new Irish drama series The Deceived.

The four-part psychological thriller airs tonight on Virgin Media One at 9pm, and follows Ophelia (Emily Reid) as she embarks on an affair with her handsome lecturer Dr Michael Callaghan (Emmett Scanlan) and falls pregnant.

Catherine plays Dr Callaghan’s wife Roisin, while Eleanor stars as Mary Mulvery in the highly anticipated series – and they spoke with Goss.ie ahead of tonight’s premiere about working with Paul who plays Sean on the show.

“Paul is one of the nicest young fellas and I couldn’t be more happy about his success,” Eleanor said of the Kildare native.

“I played his granny on Normal People, and there was buzz around the shoot – people kind of knew that this was going to be very good.”

Speaking about Paul’s Emmy nomination, Eleanor said while she “hopes” he wins the award – she was surprised that his Normal People co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones was not nominated.

“That was all very interesting because there was two of them in it. I’m wondering if it’s because a lot of hetrosexual women watched it and just fell in love with Paul.

“But Daisy’s character was really difficult and beautifully pitched I thought. He couldn’t have had that chemistry without her.”

Catherine said of Paul: “Sadly, our storylines don’t cross in this series – so I didn’t unfortunately get the opportunity to act with Paul. But, like everyone else, I found Normal People absolutely extraordinary and exquisite.”

“He’s incredible – they were both incredible,” she added, referring to Daisy, “And I feel very sad that Daisy wasn’t nominated because the show was made up of both of them so I don’t think they should have really been separated.

“I really really hope and feel that Paul deserves to win. He’s an extraordinary and beautiful actor who did such an exquisite performance.”
