Brian Dowling in the running to replace Eoghan McDermott on RTÉ 2fm

Brian Dowling is reportedly in the running to replace Eoghan McDermott on RTÉ 2fm.

Last week, Doireann Garrihy announced that she would be taking a break from the airwaves to “trial, test and fine tune” a brand new breakfast show – after her co-host recently left the station in a shock move.

A number of stars have since been tipped to replace Eoghan – including Marty Guilfoyle and Carl Mullan.

Among those in the running is Brian Dowling, according to the Irish Mail on Sunday.

A source told the newspaper: “Brian may act the joker but he has smarts in spades which is much-needed as listeners are now more in tune with current affairs.”

“Doireann provides the laughter, but the show needs someone who has a handle on current affairs and slightly more serious subjects.”

RTÉ bosses are yet to make a final decision, as they’re keen to find the “right host” to work with Doireann.

While she remains off air, 2fm Breakfast is being covered by Tara Stewart and Stephen Byrne weekdays from 6am.
