Brendan O’Connor reveals his fury towards people who stare at his daughter

Brendan O’Connor has expressed his fury towards people who stare at his daughter Mary, who has Down Syndrome.

Although the unwanted eyes enrage Brendan, he admitted that he “can’t be too aggressive” because he works in television – but that doesn’t stop his wife Sarah.

“I stare back, and have taken to telling people, ‘It’s rude to stare’, or I’d also say something like ‘Have you had a good look?’ The thing is, I can’t be too aggressive because I’m on the telly. My wife can be more aggressive about it,” he told the Irish Sun.

“The most depressing thing is that sometimes it’s teenagers staring, and you’d have thought older kids would know better.”

Despite that, the 46-year-old said that Mary is a “very happy” seven year old.

“She is such a great kid and so happy. You try and focus on that. Lately she’s started listening to the Fatboy Slim song Where U Iz, (is where it’s at) and doing a little dance to go with it that could be straight out of that Spike Jones Praise You video of people dancing in the the cinema queue.

“It’s that’s joyful. It’s an up-down world for everybody but Mary is very happy.”

Meanwhile, Brendan is being graced with rave reviews for his RTÉ show The Cutting Edge, which drew an audience of 318,800 last Wednesday night on RTE One.

Although Brendan’s show is doing well in the ratings, RTÉ’s Director General Dee Forbes dropped a bombshell this week and announced job and budget cuts within the station, but thankfully Brendan doesn’t fear getting the chop.

“I have been gotten rid of plenty of times. So I am not assuming I’ll still be here in 12 months, let alone five years. You just take what’s going. I’ll do this series and see what happens.”

Brendan previously got the boot back in 2015 when RTE axed The Saturday Night Show for The Ray D’Arcy Show, which has been pushed back an hour later from this week onwards thanks to Brendan O’Carroll’s new show All Round To Mrs Brown.

“I got bumped once on RTE for a new Mrs Brown series. At the time I was raging. You go on late, you’re worn out. But we got a massive inheritance of viewers from Mrs Brown who stayed tuned for us. Getting bumped was the best thing that ever happened to us,” Brendan said.

The Cutting Edge airs at 9.35pm on Wednesday nights.
