U2 star Bono made Gay Byrne’s 80th birthday a Beautiful Day – by sending him a special gift.
The Dublin rocker previously gifted the RTE star a motorbike along with Larry Mullen when he retired from the Late Late Show.
But this year, the 54-year-old “came up trumps” with a cake and bottle of champagne.
“He sent me a lovely message and a lovely cake and sent a lovely bottle of champagne,” Gay said. “No motorbike this time, I’ve got my own.”

And Lyric FM presenter Gay – who has vowed never to retire – also got messages from famous faces including ex-President Mary McAleese.
“My presents were very good indeed. I got such lovely things and I’m very grateful to everyone for their generosity and kindness,” he told the Star.
“I got messages from all over the country, particularly one from Mary McAleese.”
He added: “We sat outside for most of the day drinking wine and eating lovely food – I couldn’t have asked for better.”
