Blogger Terrie McEvoy urges followers to get smear checks – after receiving life changing news

Blogger Terrie McEvoy has revealed she received life changing results from a smear test.

The Australian-based influencer sobbed as she told her followers she had to get an operation, just days after receiving devastating results.

Although Terrie didn’t specify what results she was given, it was clear when she stated she worried about having to go through chemotherapy.

“In April this year I had a couple of things going on. I had a couple of mouth ulsers and I was losing weight…I felt like I needed to go to the GP and get my bloods done,” she explained.

The blogger continued that after asking for a prescription for her bill, a doctor asked her when she had her last smear test. While it’s every three years in Ireland, in Australia women get them every two years.

At first Terrie said she didn’t need one, but eventually was persuaded.

The blogger then broke down as she described the moment her phone rang when she got life changing news about her results, just days later.

“I’m shaking thinking about it,” she cried.

“That day, is a day in my head that I really struggle to go back to.”

Telling followers she didn’t know if she could “do this”, she composed herself and revealed that the words she heard on the phone were the words she hears “every single day”, as she has been a qualified nurse.

“But I still needed her to spell it out for me, I couldn’t believe that was me,” she admitted.

Terrie continued that as she left the hospital to go home she cried alone in the train station, and admitted “I really felt the distance from home”.

“I kept saying ‘I don’t want to get sick, I don’t want to get sick’.”

Terrie added that she felt like she “needed to be strong” so she didn’t tell anyone about her shocking news.

The blogger didn’t even tell her family at the time, until she was quickly scheduled to surgery, within a week of her results.

The influencer said she was confused to why this happened to her, admitting she doesn’t smoke, or eat badly. But her doctor said stress can be a huge factor.

“I was stressed. Did I want to be in Australia is this where I want to be? There was a lot of stuff going on at home too.

“My body should have been able to resolve this…but I wasn’t looking after myself.

Terrie then had to wait six months to find out if she was in the all clear, and admitted she was worried that she wouldn’t be able to have kids after the operation.

After her life changing news, Terrie organised a round-the-world trip, which she documented across her social media channels.

“I went on my big round-the-world trip. I was just like feck this I’m going, I’m going to run amok, I’m going to spend my life savings, see everything I want to see and forget about this.

“Worrying is not going to help and if I’m sitting in Australia, I’ll just be thinking about it.”

Now six months later, Terrie celebrated the news this week that she is now in the all clear, but urged women following her to get their smear test and breast checks.

“I had my appointment two weeks ago. My doctor was really happy to see me, he didn’t think I would come back to Australia,” she admitted.

“Throughout the whole summer when I was travelling I told myself ‘this is going to be okay’, ‘I’m not going to need another surgery’.

“I kept up the positivity. I just kept thinking positive. I visualised him saying ‘this is okay’.

“I got a phonecall to say everything is negative…yes”

“I’m sharing this with you because I never thought I’d see the end of this, I truly didn’t. I’m in shock that it’s been sorted so quick.

“I just want to say if you’ve been putting off that smear test, just go now. Because (my doctor) said if I had have waited until next year, we would have been looking at a very different situation.

“That scared the s**** out of me. If you feel anything abnormal going on, go get a smear test.”

After her snaps dozens of followers had already sent her screen grabs of signing up to cervicalcheck.ie.
