Bernard Dunne admits he regrets not going to the Olympics

Bernard Dunne has admitted that he would have loved to have taken part in the Olympics.

The former world champion boxer retired at the age of 30 with multiple wins and was the European Boxing Union Super Bantamweight in 2007.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t look at the Olympics and want to be part of it,” he said.

The Clondalkin native never got a chance to box in the Olympics like his father and still has an urge to get back in the ring.

“As a young kid growing up it was all I ever wanted to do, was go to the Olympic games,” the 36-year-old revealed to Danny O’Reilly on Today FM’s A Different Side.

“My Dad boxed at the Olympics in 1976 in Montreal. I wanted to follow in his footsteps and unfortunately that didn’t happen.

“It’s nothing I can change now. I could have probably waited four more years, but I thought, why would I wait when I can turn pro?

“And I see now they have pro’s at the Olympics; maybe I should go back in the ring!”

Bernard continued though that he is happy with the choices he made when he retired such as moving out to L.A.

“But those four years I used to make progress in my career, which I did,” he added

“I moved out to L.A. and trained with Freddie Roche. And the rest is history.”
