The ceremony, which took place in the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern, saw Calvin harris named as Best Solo Artist – just hours after it was announced that his ex Taylor Swift had split for her new beau Tom Hiddleston.

Before taking home the award, Calvin told the audience how this time ten years ago – he quit his job at Marks & Spencer and decided to pursue a full-time career in music.

“This is a big week for me because this week 10 years ago was the week I left Mark & Spencer Simply Food in Clapham South, where I carried out such tasks as date rotating sandwiches and showing old ladies where the salmon got moved to. Those were my two tasks.

Success: Calvin was named Best Solo Artist

“So it’s been 10 years since I also got a proper manager, not just Jill in the bakery.”
