Actress Sarah Greene admits: 'I quit working on stage so I would have money in my account'

Sarah Greene has admitted she quit working theatre jobs so she could “have money in her bank account”.

The Cork native who had previously won rave reviews for her role in The Cripple Of Inishmann divulged that she was tired of being broke.

“You spend so long working in theatre and it’s fantastic but you do get tired of being broke all the time,” she said.

“There’s been moments when I’ve been out of work and not knowing what’s next and totally broke. I started saying no to theatre jobs to make myself available for film and TV.”

“It was scary, I didn’t work for 10 months!” she admitted.

The Penny Dreadful star’s life has improved since she started landing roles in film and TV.

“Doing a TV show gives you the freedom to pick and choose a bit more because you’re not so worried about your next pay cheque,” she said.

“I’m 30  years of age and it’s the first time in my life that I’ve had money in my bank account,” she told The Star.

The Gaiety School graduate now hopes to start taking care of her parents now that she’s earning the big bucks.

“My parents are getting a little older now and I’d love to look after them like they’ve looked after me.”

The actress admitted she missed some key family events and outings with friends when she was part of a nightly stage show.

“I was meant to be a bridesmaid for my cousin last summer and I missed that and I missed my best friend’s wedding too.”

“But I made the choice to do theatre and that comes hand in hand with it. You sacrifice a lot.”
