EXCLUSIVE! Katie Taylor on Conor McGregor's announcement: 'He's entitled to retire'

Katie Taylor has opened up about Conor McGregor’s shock retirement announcement.

The Olympic Gold Medallist, who is currently gearing up to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, revealed that she was shocked to hear about the MMA fighter’s announcement.

Speaking to Goss.ie at the launch of P&G’s Thank You, Mum campaign, the world champion boxer admitted she doesn’t believe this is the end for Conor’s fighting career.

“I’m a huge fan and yeah, I was very surprised, like everyone else really.. I didn’t expect that but I don’t know if it’s going be the last we see of him,” she said.

Despite Katie’s hopes for the Dubliner to return to the octagon, she admitted he has the right to retire if he is no longer passionate about the sport.

“I’m still hoping and thinking that he will fight a few more times, but at the same time he’s had an incredible career and he’s made an awful lot of money,” she insisted.

“So he is entitled to retire if he wants to and if he hasn’t got the passion for it anymore, then that’s the right decision. But only he knows why he’s made that decision.”

Check out our full interview with Katie below, where we chat about her road to Rio, how she copes with pressure and if she’d like to make a docu-film about her life.
