Holly Carpenter hits back at column critics: 'I think people over-reacted'

Holly Carpenter has hit back at critics who slammed her newspaper column about boyfriend Danny O’Reilly.

The former Miss Ireland wrote a piece on what she did for New Year’s Eve and social media quickly erupted as Holly received an onslaught of criticism.

Many compared her column to a child’s “school essay” for its writing style, but now the Dublin native has responded to the naysayers.

“I found it extremely frustrating and embarrassing getting so much hate over a few words in the social part of my column,” she said.

“I think people over-reacted and I can’t understand or relate to anyone who gets a thrill out of typing nasty words about someone else with the aim of upsetting them.”

Holly explained she was particularly busy during the period she had to write the column and could understand that people thought it didn’t sound like her.

“Last week I wasn’t quite as organised as usual – it was New Year’s Eve after all – and I had to do a quick interview over the phone before it went to print, just to add some details,” she wrote in The Herald.

“In the end I understand why people might have felt that parts of my column just didn’t sound like me.”

“In general, I’m pretty open about my personal life but there are some aspects of it that I would rather keep to myself, which I hope people understand.”

The Irish model didn’t let herself get too down in the dumps and admitted that she’s happy to know lots of people are reading her column.

“I always try to turn any negative situation into a positive one and I guess this just showed me how many people are reading my column, which is great!”
