RTE star Louise McSharry reveals she is battling cancer – but vows to survive

RTE star Louise McSharry has revealed she is suffering cancer – after months of illness.

The 2FM presenter was given the results of a biopsy last week, which showed she had lymphomia, which is cancer of the white blood cells.

But the radio presenter insisted: “There is no doubt in my mind I will be fine”.

Now Louise – who was filling in for Ryan Tubridy – will have to undergo chemotherapy but has been told she is in a “very strong” position for treatment.

She said: “I was literally taken back. I had tears in my eyes… I knew that was cancer. He talked a bit more before he actually used that word.

“The treatment would be chemotherapy… I was sitting there going, ‘What?’ All I was thinking is how am I going to tell people this?”

Brave Louise, who has vowed to dye her hair pink, insisted she didn’t think about death when she heard she had cancer but knows things will be good.

She said: “I thought, ‘What do I do?’ I said, we’re going to beat this. Thankfully Hodgkin’s Lymphomia is beatable – and 80% of people beat it in their first treatment… there is no doubt in my mind I will be fine.

“I’m going to six months of chemotherapy and it’s going to be tough. But then I’m going to go back to my life.”

She said her worries started after she has had appendix out in December and got abscess out and started “to feel a bit strange” – and totally lost her period.

Doctors initially thought she had a dorment illness, before it got worse and she was admitted to hospital while filling in for Ryan Tubridy two weeks ago.

And Louise admitted she was glad that for once she didn’t listen to her normal self.

She added: “I’m the kind of person that would downplay these things and say, ‘everything is grand’. But I knew everything wasn’t right.”

But Louise has found it extremely tough to tell people.

She said: “All of those inital conversations were hard. After I spoke to my dad I said I had to suck it up – I didn’t want to be sad telling everyone else.”
