Oliver Callan: 'Satirising Gerry Ryan helped his family cope straight after his death'

Oliver Callan has revealed a radio sketch about Gerry Ryan four days after his death helped the DJ’s family cope.

The RTE funnyman’s show Nob Nation was aired soon after the 2FM presenter was found dead from a cocaine-fuelled heart problem in 2010.

And Oliver has told how Gerry’s widow Morah told him that the five-minute comedy routine helped her and their kids cope with the immediate loss.

He said: “It can be a difficult call to make to satirise somebody who has passed away so I was nervous before it went out.

“Gerry died on the Friday and Nob Nation was broadcast on the following Tuesday so the grief for his family and friends was still very, very raw.”

He added to the Star: “Morah and the family told me afterwards that they actually laughed at the sketches and they helped them remember Gerry as he was – which was lovely to hear.”
