Marty Whelan has hair transplant over fears he'd be sacked

RTE star Marty Whelan has revealed he underwent a secret hair transplant.

The Winning Streak presenter went for the procedure – which costs between €15,000 and €20,000 – over fears he would lose work without his locks.

The 57-year-old said: “I am not a vain person, but I am in an industry that looks at you every 12 months and says, ‘Mmmm’.

“You say to yourself this could well improve my situation. So you do it for that. But also I did it for my family, I did it for me too.”

The Lyric FM host had sessions with Hair Restoration Blackrock in December 2012 and last summer.

Doctors took follicles from the back of his head and moved them to the front of his forehead to fill the gaps.

Change: Before and after Marty’s hair transplant

And Marty – who follows in the footsteps of Louis Walsh – admitted he had started losing confidence before going on the box.

He said: “In my 30s and 40s I first noticed the loss and obviously it began to speed up and you begin to think, ‘What do I need to do here? What can we do here?’ I got to the stage where I thought, ‘I need to do something about this’.

“When you’re in make-up, or getting ready to go on television, you’re conscious of lights – the bald patch.

“So I said I had to sort this out. It can cause people to maybe lose opportunities that they might otherwise have.

“There’s no guarantee of course. But the possibility exists, and as a fella said, ‘You’ll never know otherwise’.

“From my point of view it seems to be if you’re going to find yourself thinking I wish I could do something about this.

“Well then you actually want to do something about it and give it a go.”
