Gay Byrne tells Newstalk bosses: 'Sack Pat Kenny, and I'm yours'

Gay Byrne has revealed he’s ready to sensationally quit RTE – and make a massive move to Newstalk.

But the ex-Late Late Show host – who presents a radio programme on Lyric FM – wants the money to make it worth his while.

He said: “Would I work for Newstalk? If the money was right I’d die for Portugal but would there be room for Pat Kenny and I on the same station? I doubt it — so Pat would have to go.”

And Gaybo admitted that while he’s certain that “retirement won’t suit” him – he doesn’t want to die while still a broadcaster.

Instead, the 79-year-old has told RTE he’s happy to keep working on Meaning of Life but may pull the plug on everything else.

He added: “We have three more Meaning of Life interviews to film and I’d probably do more if they asked me as it’s not a weekly commitment.

“As for the rest of the TV work, I don’t know what I am going to do. It depends how I am going to feel during the summer.

“I am totally and completely indecisive. I would rather go before I am wheeled out on a trolley.”
