Dublin DJ Annie Mac: 'I'm proud to be the first woman to take over BBC Radio'

DJ Annie Mac has said she’s very proud to be the first woman to take over Radio 1’s evening slot.

The Dublin native is filling in for Zane Lowe who recently stepped down from the gig.

While the music lover admitted she has some big shoes to fill, she’s ready to show the BBC Radio 1 audience her own style.

“The main thing I’m going to bring to it is to just be me, which will automatically be different from Zane. I’m proud to be the first woman to do this slot solo.”

Meanwhile, the radio star said she feels lucky to be in a relationship with fellow DJ Toddla T who understands her hectic lifestyle.

“He’s super-supportive. It helps that he does what I do. He knows what it takes to go DJing in Manchester and come home at 6am.”

“We still don’t know how childcare will work with the new show, we’re going to experiment and see how it works.”

With all her success, Annie has stayed humble over the years and admitted she never had plans to become the high-powered business woman she is today.

“I never thought: ‘I’m going to have merchandise and be a businesswoman,'” she told the Independent.

“But I have my own festival in Malta next month and I’m kind of running a business. I’m very much a music curator; that’s what the brand is.”
