Micheál Martin officially elected as new Taoiseach

Micheál Martin has officially been elected as the new Taoiseach.

The Fianna Fáil leader has been backed 95 to 76 by the Dáil.

The Cork native has officially became leader at a ceremony with President Michael D Higgins at Aras an Uachtarain.

The nomination was to be given on Wednesday, however, the process of electing the leader was halted when the Dáil was suspended due to a row in parliament.

Speaking to the Dáil, he said: “it is clear that there can be a degree of cynicism towards politics” and that “too often we dismiss the motivation of others, especially those we disagree with.”

Disagreeing he added: “I believe in the good faith of those who seek to serve their communities in elective office, and I believe that politics remains a force for good, a force for positive change.”

Micheál Martin’s Fianna Fáil received the most seats in the Dáil following the General Election in November last year.

This will be the politicians second term as Taoiseach

It has been agreed the party will re-enter a coalition with Fine Gael – with Simon Harris handing over the role.
