Who is Doechii and why are we obsessed with her?

Whether it be Tiktok, Spotify, or on the stage at the Grammys performing and winning Best Rap Album of the year, you have heard of Doechii.

As an artist, her innovative sound, bold and confident persona, unapologetic authenticity, her ability to fuse art, music, and fashion sense makes her an incredibly likeable character.

Doechii taps into something deeper than just a catchy beat or a viral moment—she represents a new era of fluid, honest, and inspiring artistry.

Born in 1996 in Tampa, Florida, Jatorra “Doechii” Johnson grew up surrounded by music.

Early on, she developed a passion for singing, rapping, and performing, but it wasn’t until she moved to Los Angeles that she began to shape her identity as an artist.

In a now iconic video posted to her YouTube channel in 2020, Doechii recounts being fired and longing to break into the music industry.

Speaking to the camera, the singer said: “So, I got fired today, either way, I’mma be straight.”

“I think, tomorrow, I’m just gonna go to a whole bunch of studios and ask if they have any internships open and also just ask questions,” she continued.

“I have nothing to lose, I literally have nothing to lose. I have no place, I have no job, I have no children. Who gives a f—? Who cares? Who f—ing cares? I’m just gonna do it. I’ll let you know how that goes.”

Her big break came when she released the single “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” in 2020, which immediately showcased her playful yet sharp lyricism.

The track went viral, earning her attention and rapidly growing a fanbase.

Doechii signed with the label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2021, home to some of the biggest names in hip-hop like Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and Schoolboy Q.

But instead of being immediately lumped into the realm of typical rap artists, she carved out her own lane, blending hip-hop, R&B, and experimental sounds with an unapologetic, larger-than-life personality.
