Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande performed Defying Gravity at the 2025 Oscars.
This year’s ceremony was hosted for the first time ever by Conan O’Brien, following in the footsteps of previous hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Chris Rock, Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes, to name a few.
British singer Raye, Blackpink member Lisa, singer and actress Queen Latifah, and music artist Doja Cat were also among the performers at this year’s Oscars.
After a special video homage to Los Angeles, Ariana Grande performed Over the Rainbow from 1939’s The Wizard of Oz to kick off the 97th Academy Awards.
Cynthia Erivo then performed Home from the 1975 Broadway production of “The Wiz” in a breathtaking performance.
The pair performed Defying Gravity, the song at the end of their Oscar-nominated movie Wicked.

Cynthia, the British theatre and cinema star who will host the Tony Awards on Broadway in June, was nominated for an Oscar in the leading actress category for her portrayal of Elphaba, but lost out to Mikey Madison in Anora.
Ariana Grande was also nominated for her portrayal in Wicked in the supporting actress category, but lost out to Zoe Saldaña.
