Sinead O'Connor was dumped from American Music Awards performance – after the POPE wouldn't duet

Sinead O’Connor has revealed she was axed from performing at a major awards ceremony – after the Pope wouldn’t duet with her.

The American Music Awards had asked her to perform a mash-up of Nothing Compares 2 U and Take Me To Church at their ceremony.

After hearing nothing for six weeks, the 47-year-old’s team got in contact with bosses at the AMA’s production company.

And Sinead – who expected the TV network broadcasting the event to dump her after previously ripping up a picture – was told that they were still on for having her on the show.

But bosses told her they would only have her on if Pope Francis took part to give it a “great hook”.

However, AMA executives then told her that they tried to get in contact with the Pope through his Twitter account – not by actually calling the Vatican.

She said: “It was decided that [they] would (in all seriousness) attempt to contact the Pope via his Twitter account alone, and via no other means.

“Since naturally their idea was not only disrespectful to the Pope and to millions of Catholics… they didn’t get a response and consequently I’m now not doing the show.

“Did you ever hear of such ‘Dickery’ in your life?”

Writing on her blog, Sinead said she knew – even if contacted properly – there would be no way the Pope would “consider lowering his feet into the disgusting world of show business”.

New look: Sinead has never looked better

But the AMA bosses told the Wicklow star that it would have been “great, compelling TV” to have the Pope introduce her as it would be “important, relevant… for forgiveness”.

Sinead added: “I ask who is to be forgiven? Showbiz answer he gives, ‘the world needs forgiveness’.

“As if showbiz ever gave a s**t about the world, or the principles of Christianity.”
