EXCLUSIVE! Áine Cahill opens up on her rise to fame

Áine Cahill has opened up about her rise to fame and why she is pursuing a career in music.

The Cavan native told Goss.ie that she was an avid sports fanatic in her early teen years but turned to music when she was about 16 years old.

“I really latched on to music, it helped me escape,” she said.

Áine talked about her first time performing at Electric Picnic in 2015 when she won a competition to perform on stage, but now she has four other people by her side.

“I was playing around on my own for ages and then I won a competition to play Electric Picnic,” she told Goss.ie.

“I wanted to get people around me to play so it’s not me on my own so Louise [her musical director] came and we had a band playing around.”

Recently Áine’s cover of New World Coming was used in an ad for TV3 and she was delighted to hear her song on TV.

“It’s just crazy that I’m actually on the telly,” she told Goss.ie.

“Lady Gaga inspired me to play music and Lana Del Rey is my song-writing inspiration. Marina and The Diamonds is another one that really inspired me.

The songwriter explained that while her music has been played on UK stations like the BBC she still thinks she’s up-and-coming.

“I could feel this year there has been a bigger change. But I still think I’m up-and-coming,” she said.

“I don’t know. I’m getting more support in Ireland but I would go over there to see what I could do over.”

Áine has played some huge gigs such as the 3 Arena, Electric Picnic and Glastonbury – but there was one that stood out for her.

“Glastonbury tops the three of them. It was really cool and I hope we’re going back again this year,” she said.

“I also got to perform on the BBC – that was the icing of the cake for the whole year.

“It really kind of spiralled on to loads of stuff happening.”

The 22-year-old’s passion when she was younger was sport, but now she’s focused on entertaining people through her music.

“When I was 15 or 16, I just completely switched around and wasn’t interested in sports.

“I really latched on to music, it helped me escape. I think it took me a while to realise that I am a creative person and I would rather the arts than I would sport – you get to express yourself more.

“Around the same time I was getting involved with Froga and doing plays – I just loved performing.

“I loved all that – I just love entertaining people,” she added.

Áine is travelling around Ireland with her tour in April and May – find out more information HERE.
