Damien Dempsey blasts the X Factor for making kids think music is about 'making loads of money'

Musician Damien Dempsey has hit out at the X Factor, insisting: “It has too much power”.

The Dubliner blasted the TV series for making kids think singing is just about “making loads of money” and “getting a big mansion”.

He fumed: “X Factor has become too big. It is taking over everything and has too much power. I think kids are starting to think that singing is all about getting famous and making loads of money.

“It was never about that. Singing was always about helping us through life. It is only recently that it has become about becoming famous and getting a big mansion.”

Annoyed Damien admits some TV talent shows – especially the Voice – do “give an opportunity” for people to raise their profile.

But Damien fears people are simply giving up on their dream because humiliation at the hands of Simon Cowell means they fear they’ll never make huge sums.

“That’s not what it is about. It is not about getting rich, it is something that should help you through life,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

“Those who go into the music business believing that they are going to make megabucks are probably in for a rude awakening. I’ve only started making money in the last few years and it is not that great [an amount] of money.

“People think you are loaded but you only make 80 cents on every album copy sold. It is only the really big people who make money from music.”
