Coldplay pays touching tribute to Tom Petty

Tom Petty died on Monday at the age of 66

Coldplay paid tribute to Tom Petty and the victims of the Las Vegas shooting at their sold out gig in Portland.

Famed musician Tom Petty died of a heart attack on Monday in Los Angeles, at the age of 66.

The Grammy-winning band took to the stage at the Moda Center, where their Heart Full of Dreams Tour was playing to a sold-out crowd.

During the concert, lead singer Chris Martin was joined by R.E.M. co-founder and lead guitarist Peter Buck, before launching into an touching cover of Petty’s track ‘Free Fallin’ – the lead single off Petty’s solo debut album.

The band also had a minute of silence for the victims of the Las Vegas shooting, and blacked out the stadium so that the crowd’s cell phone lights were the only thing illuminating the entire stadium.

“When words fail, sometimes quiet is the most eloquent,” The band wrote on Twitter, captioning a photo of the touching moment.
