Bono defends decision to share free album on iTunes: 'I'm excited we got people annoyed'

Bono has defended U2’s decision to release their latest album for free, syncing with millions of iTunes accounts.

The Irish band were blasted for releasing their latest album Songs Of Innocence with Apple but Bono believes bad publicity is better than no publicity.

Speaking to Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2, he said: “I mean it was the same on our first album and it’s kind of why you got into a band was to stir things up and annoy people.

“If you weren’t doing that you weren’t doing anything so I am very excited that we’ve got people annoyed and just being discussed.

“The only thing that could have gone wrong is if we were ignored.”

Meanwhile the U2 frontman admitted he is afraid to share new songs with his daughter Eve – as “she’s really vicious” when his music is no good.

The Dublin singer revealed that his daughter is his biggest critic when it comes to listening to his new tracks, and even sends him notes.

“It’s rough. I got notes from my daughter; she sends me notes on the mixes. She’s really vicious,” he said.

“She’s a smart girl so I listen to her. I am kind of nervous playing her stuff.”

However Bono revealed a lot of “blood, sweat and tears” went into the band’s latest album.

“All I can say is that is a lot of blood; sweat and tears went into your junk mail,” he said.

“We get people who might want to delete it but believe me no body has deleted more songs U2 songs over the last five years than U2.

“That’s why it took so long but their great songs you know that’s just a thrill that so many people have heard them.”
