Bono admits: 'If fans don't like the new songs, I'll quit the band'

Bono has revealed that if U2’s new songs aren’t a winner with fans on their Innocence And Experience tour he’ll quit the band.

The Dublin native admitted that he’s often been tempted to “walk away” from the long-running group but will definitely be “out of here” if the latest songs don’t do well.

“I am at a point where I am interested to know will these songs land?” he said.

Quit: Bono will leave U2 if the new songs are a flop with fans

“I know thirty-five million people have been listening to them regularly but does that mean they mean as much to them as other songs? I don’t know. So, we’ll see.”

“I’ve got vocal issues at the moment but if we get a true performance – and the songs truly don’t land – I’m out of here.”

The rock star divulged that while the band loves to perform, they have been toying with the idea of retiring.

Future: U2 have been considering retiring

“We believe in ourselves and particularly believe in this series of songs,” he told The Independent.

“There is always that part of yourself that thinks, ‘C’mon. It’s been thirty years. Why don’t we just fuck off and get out of the way of the next thing?”

The 55-year-old revealed that the death of his mother Iris who passed away when he was just 14 made him turn his hand to music.

“I have very little memory of my mother because in our house we didn’t talk about her,” he said.

“Because that is the way a lot of Irish males dealt with it. There are no photographs of her. Nothing.”

“Years later,  this film turned up, by a friend of a friend of the family. It’s black-and-white footage of her playing rounders on the beach in Rush. It was very, very moving.”
