More details of Avicii’s demanding and unhealthy lifestyle have come out since his shocking death at the age of 28.

In a 2013 article in GQ that documented the lifestyle of the Swedish DJ on tour, it is revealed that he lived, “On a diet of Red Bull, nicotine, and airport food.”

In 2013, Avicii, real name Tim Berling, was reportedly playing over 250 shows a year and making six figures per show.

According to the article, before shows Tim was seen, “Smoking like a chimney and knocking back Red Bulls.”

Once on stage, Avicii had codes that prompted deliveries of his vices.  He would apparently hold up two fingers to be handed a lit cigarette or make a “C” with his hand to be given another drink.

As if it wasn’t dangerous enough to be surrounded by drunk party-goers every night, “The booze [was] always free for Avicii.”

Avicii wouldn’t show up to venues til around midnight, creating an unhealthy sleeping schedule. The schedule was far from his only unhealthy habit.

“You are traveling around, you live in a suitcase, you get to this place, there’s free alcohol everywhere—it’s sort of weird if you don’t drink,” he said.

He detailed his routine of free champagne every night, Bloody Marys in the mornings and wine on every flight, and he flew constantly.

“I just got into a habit, because you rely on that encouragement and self-confidence you get from alcohol, and then you get dependent on it.”

After being diagnosed with acute pancreatitis from excessive drinking, the Swede claimed he had calmed down his party ways.

“I probably drink more now than I should, but I have a pace. I never drink two days in a row.”
