Irish movie Calvary is the most successful independent movie in the US

Critically acclaimed Irish film Calvary is continuing its success after opening in America.

The movie, which comes from The Guard director John Michael McDonagh has taken in an average of $18,000 (€13,443) per screen since opening in the US.

This is the highest screen average for any independently released film over the weekend.

“The opening weekend figures fall right in line with our expectations,” Fox Searchlight’s SVP Frank Rodriguez said.

Brendan Gleeson and Chris O'Dowd in John Michael McDonagh's Calvary.

“Based on the reactions from various screenings we have held, we are aware of the film’s great playability and expect that good word of mouth will help to direct audiences to see ‘Calvary.’”

American critics have praised the movie. The New Yorker said Brendan Gleeson’s performance was outstanding, and that “any scene, whatever its mood, feels solidly earthed by his presence.”

Meanwhile USA Today described Gleeson’s performance as “brilliant in its blend of compassion, weariness, humility and faith.”
