Colin Farrell is being lined up to play Brian Boru in the most expensive film ever made in Ireland.
Producers are hoping that Brian Boru: Freedom Within The Heart will be a trilogy as big as Lord of the Rings.
It has been given a budget of €102 million – double that of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart which was filmed in Ireland in 1994.
Director Mark Mahon insisted the project is “120% alive”, and will centre on the first 30 years of Clare-born Boru.
Historical: Colin playing Alexander The Great
It will show his bloody rise to power as the King of Munster, and it comes as the 1,000th anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf is being commemorated this weekend.
Previously Colin has showed his skills at playing similar historical characters in Alexander.
