Brendan Gleeson refuses to even dream of a Calvary Oscar nomination

Movie star Brendan Gleeson is refusing to tip himself to be nominated for an Oscar – despite huge anticipation one is coming.

The Dublin actor has been tipped to be nominated by prestigious US film critics for his role in Calvary after its American release this month.

But the 59-year-old said he plans to “ignore” all discussion of Oscars until the nominations are actually announced.

“I think the practical and sensible thing to do would be ignore any talk or thoughts of Oscars,” he said.

“It all depends on how the movie performs at the box office. We’ve got the critics on board, let’s hope the audience also like it.”

Already, Calvary has done exceptionally well at the US box office – and beat all expectations to become the most successful independent movie of current.

Meanwhile Brendan has admitted he was shocked by the hype when son Domhnall was cast in the new Star Wars movie.

He said: “It’s brilliant that he’s in it and I’m dying to see the film now.

“I was never a big Star Wars head so I was quite surprised by the reaction to Domhnall being cast.”

The IFTA winner was speaking at the Lighthouse Cinema, for the premiere of his new film The Grand Seduction.
