Brendan Gleeson all but set to get an Oscar nomination for Calvary, according to Hollywood

Brendan Gleeson looks all but set to pick up an Oscar nomination, according to those in the know in Hollywood.

The Irish actor has so far yet to get a nod throughout his career, but it appears his role as a pursued priest in Calvary could be his saving grace.

Predictions for who will be nominated for next February’s Academy Awards have got to fever-pitch this week – and Gleeson appears to be worthy.

In with a chance: Brendan in Calvary

Esteemed industry magazine Variety placed him on their list for Best Actor, saying that he “earned some of the best reviews of his career for playing the priest of a small Irish town”.

They have placed him up with Benedict Cumberbatch for The Imitation Game and Eddie Redmayne, for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

The Hollywood Reporter and The New York Post said that Calvary is one of the films which are likely to get an Oscar nomination.

The LA Times said he could well be in with a chance for a Best Actor nod, saying he is “coming up with such frequency and passion as a potential lead actor Oscar candidate”.

Goss.ie previously told how Indiewire ranked him as a “potential dark horse” in the awards race.

During his career, Brendan has been nominated three times at the Golden Globes – for The Guard, In Bruges and Into the Storm.

The Oscars take place on February 22, with nominations for Best Actor announced in January.
