Amanda Seyfried reveals who she wants to play Sophie’s daughter in Mamma Mia 3

Amanda Seifried has revealed she wants to see Sabrina Carpenter play her character Sophie’s daughter in Mamma Mia 3.

In 2023, Judy Craymer, who produced the first two instalments in the franchise, told Deadline that the third film’s script was “in its earliest stages.”

The 65-year-old also revealed that a plotline had been devised to include Meryl Streep’s character Donna – who died a number of years before the plot of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

During her interview with Will Ganss of ABC News, the Emmy-winning actress was asked about the possibility of a third instalment in the franchise.

She mentioned that “everybody says it’s gonna happen,” but she hasn’t seen a script yet.

The reporter then mentioned that Sabrina Carpenter had been performing Mamma Mia as part of her surprise cover repertoire at Madison Square Garden over the weekend, among other locations on her Short ‘N Sweet tour.

“Because we know age is sort of a forgettable construct in the MMCU, the Mamma Mia Cinematic Universe. So people are saying, could Sabrina play Sophie’s daughter?” Will asked Amanda.

The actress replied seemingly uncertainly, “It’s…eh…. It’s…. Technically she could.”

However Amanda was persuaded when he brought up the fact that, despite their brief age difference, Cher and Meryl Streep’s characters in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again played mother and daughter.

“You’re right, actually, [it] doesn’t matter,” the star said.

“You know what? Old age makeup for me. That’s what it will be…. I’m an actor. I’ll do it. If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen. It’s fine. She’s…I’m a big fan.”

Speaking about the third instalment, Judy Craymer told Deadline: “There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back — and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna.”

“I don’t want to over-egg it, but I know there’s a trilogy there.”

The first Mamma Mia! film was released in 2008, raking in over $611 million at the box office.

The movie boasted a star-studded cast, including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard.

Ten years after the first film was released, the cast returned for a sequel – which followed the backstory of Meryl Streep’s character, Donna, featuring a younger version of her played by Lily James.

The second movie was a huge hit, making a whopping €402 million at the box office.

To date, the Mamma Mia! stage shows, films and albums have grossed more than $4 billion.
