Aidan Turner a real-life hero after tackling mugger who stole fan's handbag

Irish Hobbit actor Aidan Turner was dubbed a real-life hero after taking on a mugger who tried to steal a fan’s handbag.

The Hollywood actor – who plays dwarf Kili in the films – was at a Ukrainian film festival when he jumped in.

He was outside the Hotel Bristol at the Odessa International Film Festival chatting to a young female fan – when a mugger on a bike stole her handbag.

But Aidan, 31, quickly ran after the man and took the handbag off him – although in the confusion the mugger was able to get back on his bike and escape.

He said: “It’s great to be a real hero for a change rather than just an on-screen one.

“I think the rescue though was more like something from Indiana Jones than the Hobbit.”

And Aidan, who is actually 5’11”, said he felt lucky to be a lot taller than the character he plays.

“Fortunately I am not really as short as people who saw the film think I am,” he said.

“They achieved that special effect with millions of dollars of cinema trickery.”
