The Handmaid’s Tale author Margaret Atwood criticises Kylie Jenner for hosting controversial costume party

The reality star was branded "clueless" earlier this year

Margaret Atwood has criticised Kylie Jenner for hosting a party inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale.

The show, which is based on Margaret Atwood’s book, is set in a dystopian future where fertile women are held as slaves and raped by their masters, in order to bear children for the infertile upper class women.

Back in June, Kylie caused serious controversy by throwing a Handmaid’s Tale themed party for her best friend Anastasia Karanikolaou’s birthday, as they celebrated the return of the hit Hulu series.

In videos posted on social media, Kylie and her friends dressed up in red cloaks and white bonnets, and sipped on special cocktails named Praise Be Vodka and Under His Eye Tequila.

The mother-of-one welcomed partygoers by saying: “Praise be, ladies. Welcome, welcome. You know The Handmaid’s Tale is my favourite show ever… welcome to Gilead.”

While Kylie and her friends seemed to enjoy the themed bash because they’re huge fans of the show, many were left horrified by Kylie’s ignorance.

Months later, the author of The Handmaid’s Tale has slammed Kylie for “missing the point”.

Speaking to New York Magazine, she said: “Oh, Kylie Jenner, I had to look up who Kylie Jenner was, I’m so old.”

The series is based on Margaret Atwood’s book

When asked about the controversy surrounding Kylie’s party, she said: “My readers deal with those things. They notice them before I do.”

“I expect that Kylie Jenner heard from some of them along the lines of ‘We appreciate the thought, but you kind of missed it.’ There were some themed tequila. People often do this in a very well-meaning way; they’re not trying to be unpleasant.”

She added: “It has been the occasion when I’ve been speaking somewhere and I will be greeted with Handmaid’s Tale cupcakes because the person doing the catering is such a fan.”

“Will I turn up my nose at such cupcakes? No, I will not. I will not do that.”
