The Big Bang Theory star opens up about ‘brutal’ battle with COVID-19

Jim Parsons has opened up about his “brutal” battle with COVID-19.

The Big Bang Theory star, who played Sheldon Cooper in the series, revealed that he and his husband Todd Spiewak had contracted the virus back in March – initially thinking they were suffering from the common cold.

Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the actor said: “Todd and I both had it early on, it was like the middle of March.

“We didn’t know what it was, we thought we had colds. And then it seemed less likely, and then finally we lost our sense of smell and taste – utterly.”

“It defied the descriptions for me – I didn’t realise how completely taste and smell could be gone.

“And when you’re in quarantine and there’s really nothing to do but eat – oh my god, that was brutal.

“I ate everything, I just didn’t taste it. The definition of wasted calories,” he added.

After recovering from the virus, Jim revealed he resorted to creative outlets to keep busy – and even dyed his hair blonde.

“I tried other creative outlets because acting obviously wasn’t happening. I took a painting class for a while, I took a creative writing class for a while, and everything petered out.”

Jim rose to fame playing Sheldon on the hit US show The Big Bang Theory, which ran from 2007 to 2019.

Ahead of the final scene of the show, Jim paid tribute to the series and his cast mates in an emotional Instagram post – writing: “As we get ready to tape our final episode tonight, to walk in and out of this apartment door for the last time, it is hard to find the words to articulate what a profound experience this has been.

“But the words ‘love’ and ‘gratitude’ come to mind… so love and gratitude to all of you.”
