Scarlett Johansson and Disney reach settlement in Black Widow dispute

Scarlett Johansson and Disney have reached a settlement in their legal battle over an alleged loss of earnings for the film Black Widow.

The actress sued the Walt Disney Company in July, claiming that her contract was breached when Disney released the movie on its streaming service Disney+, at the same time it was released in cinemas.

The 36-year-old claimed its release strategy for the movie deprived her of money.

The terms of the settlement between the two parties have not been release publicly, but Scarlett said in a statement: “I am happy to have resolved our differences.”

“I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come.”

Alan Bergman, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, said: “We appreciate [Scarlett’s] contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and look forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects, including Disney’s Tower of Terror.”

As well as acting in the film, Scarlett served as an executive producer on Black Widow, and her potential earnings were tied to its box office performance.

Disney opted for a hybrid release in July, as some cinemas in major markets remained closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After a delay in the release of more than a year due to the pandemic, the film earned more than $378 million (€325 million) at the box office – a chunk of which came from Disney+.

It was also revealed that Scarlett had been paid $20 million (€17.3 million) for the film.
