Riverdale star apologises for posting fat-shaming tweets

The actor feels "ashamed"

Charles Melton has issued an apology, after a series of old tweets surfaced in which he fat-shamed people.

The actor recently rose to fame for his role as Reggie on the hit CW series Riverdale, but unfortunately his newfound fame has unearthed some nasty skeletons in his closet.

The tweets were from 2011 and 2012, and one read, “Fat chicks need to understand that wearing yoga pants is a privilege, not a right.”

Other tweets read, “Don’t tease fat kids, they already have enough on their plates,” and, “Headed to the gym. Word of wisdom for the day…if you’re fat…don’t look in the mirror.”

After fans shared screenshots of the tweets on Twitter, Charles issued an apology via E! News.

The 27-year-old said, “I’m truly sorry for making inconsiderate comments several years ago and apologize to anyone I hurt.

“What I posted and said was immature, offensive and inappropriate. I am ashamed of how I acted and there is no excuse for that behavior.”

“I’m striving to do better and will use this experience to grow, helping others to understand how these types of statements are completely unacceptable.

Charles has since changed his Twitter account to private.
