The pair didn't get along at all

Nina Dobrev has admitted that she “despised” Paul Wesley, while playing his love interest on The Vampire Diaries.

The actors played lovers Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore in the CW series, and were always lauded for their amazing on-screen chemistry.

However, Nina has revealed that they actually “didn’t get along” in real life, during the first few months of filming the popular show.

Speaking on the Directionally Challenged podcast, the actress said: “Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn’t like Paul Wesley.”

Nina recalled: “I remember everyone would walk up to me after the show aired and they’d be like, ‘Are you and Paul dating in real life?’ Because everyone thought that we had such good chemistry.”

She said the experience taught her that there’s “a fine line between love and hate.”

Nina laughed: “And we despised each other so much, that it read as love. We really just didn’t get along the first maybe five months of shooting.”

Thankfully, Nina and Paul “ended up getting to a good place” and they’re now “really good friends.”
