Morgan Freeman apologises amid sexual harassment reports

The 80-year-old is the latest Hollywood star to be accused of sexual misconduct

Morgan Freeman has apologised following allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour.

The 80-year-old is the latest Hollywood star to be accused of sexual misconduct, following the rise of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.

In a CNN investigation, the news outlet spoke to 16 people, eight of whom said they were victims of harassment or inappropriate behaviour by Morgan, and eight said that they had witnessed the alleged misconduct.

The 16 people described a pattern of inappropriate behaviour by the Hollywood star on set, while promoting his movies, and at his production company Revelations Entertainment.

Following the report, the Hollywood actor has apologised for his actions.

In a statement, he said, “Anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows I am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy,” the statement from Freeman reads.

“I apologise to anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected – that was never my intent.”

The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), which gave Morgan a lifetime achievement award in January, are now said to be reconsidering the prize.

In a statement, the union said, “These are compelling and devastating allegations which are absolutely contrary to all the steps that we are taking to (ensure) a safe work environment for the professionals in this industry.”

“Any accused person has the right to due process, but it is our starting point to believe the courageous voices who come forward to report incidents of harassment.”

“Given Mr Freeman recently received one of our union’s most prestigious honours recognising his body of work, we are therefore reviewing what corrective actions may be warranted at this time,” they added.
