The singer met her ex-husband back in 2008, when they starred alongside each other in the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ The Last Song.
After an on-again off-again relationship of almost ten years, Liam and Miley finally tied the knot in 2018 – before filing for divorce less than a year later.
“I recently went through a very public divorce that f**king sucked,” she said on the latest podcast of The Joe Rogan Experience.
“What really sucked about it wasn’t the fact that me and someone that I loved realized that we don’t love each other the way that we used to anymore.
“That’s OK, I can accept that. I can’t accept the villainizing, and just all those stories,” she said.
“It’s just amazing to me that the public kind of thinks that there is no gap in time that they didn’t see that could possibly be what led to [my divorce].
“Like, it’s not, ‘One day you were happy on the carpet, and the next you’re making out with your friend in Italy, what the f–k?’ Well, there was a lot of time between that that you didn’t see.”
“You’re telling a story from always being behind — especially when it comes to the media.”
Speaking about her newly single relationship status, after recently splitting from Cody Simpson, Miley said: “I guess I really don’t need to be in a relationship at all.”
“This is a super pivotal moment for me right now. I haven’t been single [since] 2015. I mean … I’ve had a few months here and there where I’ve been single but not for a long period of time.”
The Midnight Sky singer entered a very public relationship with Kaitlynn Carter, Brody Jenner’s ex, just weeks after her split from Liam.
Following Miley’s brief relationship with Kaitlynn Carter, she entered into a relationship with Cody Simpson for 10 months.
Miley confirmed her split with Cody last month, adding: “We are just deciding who we wanna be in our lives, what we wanna do, and so, don’t make it some drama story if next week we’re hanging out, getting pizza.”
“We’ve been friends for 10 years and we’re going to continue to be friends, so just don’t make it something that it is not.”
