Matthew McConaughey opens up about sexual harassment: ‘I was a #MeToo victim’

Matthew McConaughey has revealed he was a #MeToo victim, as he opened up about being sexually harassed.

The Hollywood star first rose to fame after appearing in the 1993 coming-of-age comedy Dazed and Confused, before regularly appearing in rom-com films as the leading man.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, the 50-year-old admitted that experienced unwanted advances following his rise to fame: “It was middle-aged women who were really wealthy.

“They seemed to feel like they had a right to trespass on my territory. I’m talking late-night knocks on my hotel door, to passing by and even touching me… there was a real sense of entitlement.”

“Usually they had quite a bit of champagne in them. I guess you could say I was a #MeToo victim, but hey, they’re all forgiven on my end,” he added.

The Oscar-winning actor revealed he was “molested” as a teenager, and “blackmailed” into losing his virginity at the age of 15, opening up about the incidents in his explosive new memoir, Greenlights.

Matthew wrote: “I was blackmailed into having sex for the first time when I was 15. I was certain I was going to hell for the premarital sex.”

“Today, I am merely certain that I hope that’s not the case.”

Matthew went on to reveal he was sexually assaulted by a man, after being “knocked unconscious” in the back of a van when he was a teenager.

“I was molested by a man when I was 18 while knocked unconscious in the back of a van,” he wrote.

Despite the traumatic incidents, Matthew said: “I’ve never felt like a victim. I have a lot of proof that the world is conspiring to make me happy.”

Matthew’s book has been described as an “unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction.”
