Mamma Mia is getting a sequel – with the movie’s original cast returning

It’s the age of sequels and reboots, and one beloved musical is about to be back for more.

A second Mamma Mia movie directed by Ol Parker is currently in the works, it has been confirmed.

All of the original cast are expected to return for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, which is due to hit theatres in July of next year.

The first movie, based on the smash hit ABBA musical of the same name, came out in 2008 and drew in almost $610million at the box office.

It’s back!: A sequel to Mamma Mia will officially be hitting cinemas next year | Universal Pictures

It followed Meryl Streep as a single mother whose daughter (Amanda Seyfried) invites the three men that she suspects could be her father to her upcoming wedding.

Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd portrayed the three potential dads and Dominic Cooper played Amanda’s on-screen fiancé – while the pair also dated in real life.

According to Universal, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again will feature ABBA songs that did not appear in the first film, “along with some reprised favourites”.

Judy Craymer, who created and produced the stage musical, is returning as a producer alongside Gary Goetzman, and ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus will again act as executive producers while providing music and lyrics.
